There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe…

A couple of days ago my fifteen-year-old son was analyzing poetry for his English class. I think he was supposed to choose a poem, explain its meaning, and describe how he related to it on a personal level. So I have decided to do the same. Being a mom to seven children who have all kinds of special needs and talents, I’ve chosen a poem that I deeply relate to. There was an old woman… Now wait just a minute. Even though I relate to this nursery rhyme, I take issue with the word “old.” Why are women with lots … Continue reading

Get Smart (2008)

Would you believe … that this is a great movie with a fitting tribute to the original series, but a refreshing look at intelligence and comedy all in one package? Get Smart is a fun film that combines intelligence, sight gags and physical humor blend together to create an entertaining film that doesn’t take itself seriously and doesn’t ask the audience to either. Popcorn Humor I enjoyed the original series when I was a kid. It was fun and it was funny. Barbara Feldon was easy to admire and aspire to as the smart, savvy and beautiful Agent 99. Once upon a time, before Mario Party, Zelda, and World of Warcraft, before Nintendo DS Lights, Wii, Sony Playstations, and video I-pods, and even before television and radio, there lived storytellers. Now, storytellers were an interesting breed of human beings, who looked pretty much like everybody else, except for a certain mysterious sparkle in their eyes. People, especially children, would eagerly gather around to hear their tales of enchantment, misfortune, romance, adventure, and luck. The storyteller was animated. The storyteller was passionate. She made her voice dance with magic and her face glow with expression. She took every listener along … Continue reading

When Towels Take Over

I figured something out today. I have too many towels. Yes, that’s right. For every load of laundry I do, there are four or five towels which must be added in. (And I do a whole lot of laundry. You have no idea.) Then, about double that amount comes out of the dryer, half of which end up on the floors of bathrooms, at the bottom of laundry hampers, stuffed under beds, and wadded behind toilets. The person who did this is called “Not Me.” “Not Me” is quite the culprit in my house. This character spills random liquids in … Continue reading
