Opinion Piece About Isolation Rooms Spawns Investigation

A controversial opinion piece was published in the New York Times recently. In the piece, the writer describes a horrible situation that happened to his daughter, a kindergartener, who had been placed into an isolation room at school. Years later, an investigation into the situation has been started, and a lawsuit has been filed. This is a confusing story. It started when Bill Lichtenstein wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times. In his writing, he discussed the problems with using isolation rooms as a form of discipline in schools. Some have described these rooms as “scream rooms” because … Continue reading

Scream Rooms

I was just reading another one of our bloggers post on “Scream Rooms” being used in some elementary schools. My son George has epilepsy that causes seizures in the right frontal quarter of his brain. The right frontal lobe controls behavior, impulse control and the decision making between right and wrong. George has had anger issues before and in his IEP or Individual Education Plan he had directions for calming and redirecting him. I know that as a parent I would never sign off on my child being put into a room with or without a teacher until I saw … Continue reading

The Controversy About “Scream Rooms”

An elementary school in Connecticut has been using what are being referred to as “scream rooms” as a means of disciplining students who have special needs. Needless to say, parents are outraged. There is the potential that your child’s school is using something similar, without directly informing parents about it. Farm Hill School is a public elementary school that is run by the Area Cooperative Regional Education Services in North Haven, Connecticut. They have been using a controversial form of discipline with students who have special needs. They are using what is technically called a “seclusion room”, which is allowed … Continue reading

Parent Argues for Use of Isolation Room

This is quite the opposite of what usually happens! Typically, news articles have stories where parents of a child who has special needs make a case against the use of a “scream room”. This time, however, a parent is pointing out why she wants her children, who have autism, to be able to have access to a safe, soft, isolation room. Some schools use isolation rooms as part of their Special Education program. The rooms have been referred to by some as “scream rooms”, because the child placed inside is screaming. This time, we have a parent who is explaining … Continue reading

Illinois School Earns Award for Special Education

Most of the time, if a news article talks about Special Education, it is because the news is bad. It is incredibly refreshing to hear a story about a school that has an excellent Special Education program. A school in Elgin, Illinois, has been granted a very high honor by an important national organization. It seems to me that we hear three or four negative stories about things happening in Special Education before we hear one that talks about a positive situation. I’m not sure if this is because bad news, scandalous behavior, and words of hate, fly faster across … Continue reading

What is the Best Way to Integrate Special Needs Students?

Lately, there have been many stories in the news about children who were in special education classrooms and who were being mistreated. Some believe that the solution is to integrate students who have special needs into mainstream classrooms. What is the best way to do that? Recently, a father wanted to know what was happening in his son’s classroom that was causing him to have violent outbursts. He sent his son, who has autism, to school with a hidden audio recording device. The six hours of audio revealed that his son was being bullied by his teachers. In January of … Continue reading
