Potty Time? Not Right Now

One of the big experiences that parents of toddlers encounter is potty training. This evening, I realized that Dylan really has not started potty training at all. He wants to wear training pants, but he does not want to stop playing outside or whatever else he is doing to let me know that he has to use the potty. He does not even tell me when he needs to be changed. It is probably a good thing that he has not started potty training, though, because I have not yet educated myself about how to do it. I want to … Continue reading

Potty Training Problems Solved!

For most parents the thought of potty training can be a little overwhelming to say the least. It’s hard to know where to start if you’ve never done this before. You may feel as if you have tried everything under the sun and nothing is working. Don’t worry, they will get the hang of it, it just may take a little time. I started potty training Logan when he was about two and a half, but when we got divorced he reverted back to diapers within a week or two. This is normal, but after a month or two I … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part IX

We had a very successful first week in which I did not change one poopy diaper or clean up more than three accidents! I was very pleased with our son’s potty training success. However, I was not one hundred percent sure that using the potty was an established habit for our son. As week two of potty training began I had my fingers crossed that we would not take any steps backwards in our potty training progress. Our son still seemed really into using the potty and he found his chocolate rewards very motivating. Sometimes he would go potty and … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part VII

Our first day of hard core potty training was a success. I switched him into a diaper for the night. As we went to sleep that night all I could think about was whether or not our potty training success was a fluke or for real. The next morning he awoke with a wet diaper but it was not soaked like it normally was. I put him in underwear right away after he emptied his bladder. Once again I employed the pantless strategy to help him be more aware of when he had to go potty and it was also … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part I

I have been dreading this phase of our son’s development since I consciously acknowledged that one day he would need to be potty trained. While I looked forward to the day that our son no longer needed to wear diapers and the day that I would no longer need to change them, I did not look forward to the accidents in his big boy underwear which would inevitably end up on the floor/carpet. Once our son crossed the two year old threshold, I made my first attempt at getting him potty trained. We started talking about him being a big … Continue reading

Potty Training 101

Potty training isn’t one of those “one size fits all” kind of things. Every child is unique, they develop at different rates. One child may be ready to be completely potty trained at 18 months and another may still be struggling at 4. You may have to try several different strategies before you find one that works for you and your child. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while, most kids aren’t potty trained in a day. The first and most important thing when it comes to potty training is knowing when your child is ready. Can she stay … Continue reading

Finding More Time To Work

Being a home – based professional gives me the flexibility to work anytime, anywhere. Of course, for me, any time means any time that my son is napping, sleeping, or in the care of my husband or another loving relative. Anywhere does mean just that, though. Today I thought it might be fun to talk about some of the places that I have taken my trusty laptop in the interest of getting work done when the opportunity presents itself. Why today? Well, today I am sitting in the waiting room of the phlebotomy lab at a hospital an hour away … Continue reading

Take Your Time

Homeschooling is not a race to the finish line. It is a journey that one should savor and enjoy. It is exploration not a raid on a new land. It is self discovery not artificial intelligence. It is education not schooling. Education takes time and patience. Schooling is rushing through a curriculum to advance to the next grade. Homeschooling frees you of grade levels, systems, and mediocre expectations. There is no need to get through Lessons 1 through 5 today when you can explore nature and spend time visiting the Hundred Acre Wood with Pooh and friends. When you are … Continue reading
