Floaties Require a Doctor’s Note?

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a mother was escorted by police from a public swimming pool because she allowed her son to wear floaties. Her son has cerebral palsy. The pool rules prohibit floaties. Somehow, I think this could have been handled in a way that didn’t require police involvement. Legally speaking, public swimming pools are required to be ADA compliant. This means that public pools, (and the ones in hotels and motels) must meet the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The pools must have permanent lifts or underwater ramps that will provide access into and out of the pool … Continue reading

Being Safe Around The Water

The heat is here in Salt Lake City. When it is already in the 90’s at the beginning of June we know we are in trouble. It’s time to find ways to cool off. What better way to cool of than to get in the water? Going swimming is something you can do with your kids that is relatively inexpensive, and if you are a single mother, that is always necessary. When Hailey was younger I always tried to have some kind of water fun at home, even if it was a sprinkler and one of those plastic kiddie pools. … Continue reading

Our Swimming Pool Adventures: Getting Ready

It has been uncommonly hot this spring. The only problem with such high temperatures in the spring season is that none of the public aquatic centers are open. Our son and I have been longing for some water fun since late March (when we had a few days with temperatures in the high eighties). Public Swimming Pools Must be ADA Compliant

Summer is just around the corner. Many families will be taking their children to the local public swimming pool. Public pools are required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they must have permanent lifts or underwater ramps to provide accessibility. The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA is a series of regulations that public places are required to meet. The purpose is to make stores, banks, restaurants, and all other places that are open to the public accessible for people who have disabilities. Often, this means that a business must have at least one bathroom stall … Continue reading
