Sample Annual Review for a Home Based Business

Yesterday, I talked about the importance of evaluating your performance and the performance of your home – based business at least once a year. Since I have not evaluated my two home – based businesses yet this year, now is a good time for me to do so. Today I am evaluating my freelance writing business. It is the business that I spend the most time working at, and the business that is my primary source of income. Just so you know exactly what is being evaluated, my freelance writing business is a sole proprietorship. I work part time, between ten and … Continue reading

Businesses for Homeschooled Kids

A conversation with a friend’s daughter today got me thinking. She’s starting a business. She’ll be working in pet care, taking care of peoples’ pets while they’re on vacation. As she described it, she’ll be brushing them, petting them, and playing with them. And oh yes, feeding them. She’s six. The beauty of homeschooling your children is that they have time to explore their interests, you have time to introduce them to your passions, and you have time to see how these two things develop together. This means that wonderful possibilities can emerge, possibilities like a home business. Pet Care … Continue reading

Is A Pet Care Business Right For You?

For those of you who think that pet-sitting or dog walking is a job best left for high schoolers, you may want to think again. Pet care is a home based business that requires very little in the way of start up costs and is always in demand. If you love animals and you know how to care for them, you could start a pet care business. Many people enjoy having companion animals at home. Many of these people also have to go to work. While some pets like cats and guinea pigs are fine with being home all day … Continue reading

Are Homeschool Parents Arrogant?

I happened upon a magazine article yesterday that discussed the pros and cons of homeschooling. It listed all the traditional concerns—socialization, keeping up with peers, etc.—and then an additional concern was raised. Are homeschool parents arrogant for thinking they can possibly teach their children everything they need to know? I had to stop and think about that for a minute. To be honest, the question took me aback. I’d never considered it before. Do I, as a homeschool mother, think I’m better than everyone else? Do I think I have some kind of special power that no one else has? … Continue reading

Schools Deal with Rising Gas Prices

Previously I had commented on how the rise in gas prices had affected schools. Schools are spending more and more money on transportation. Many field trips have been cut out and districts are losing money on transporting students to and from school. I was actually surprised to see that Middle Tennessee had made the NEA morning reports with their story on how the schools have been negatively affect by gas prices. Just today I noticed that the price had rose another three cents. It seems that it is not going down anytime soon. My district had begun taking measures to … Continue reading

Fifth Grade Homeschool Basics

For the fifth grade, I like to move homeschoolers from passively learning to actively learning. This means I like to move from learning games to books and research. This of course can be done slowly over time. This following list details what a fifth grader needs to know. Fifth Grade Math Curriculum builds upon lessons learned in previous years, but with greater difficulty. In this post I listed websites that can help you teach important fifth grade concepts. In Fifth Grade Language Arts Curriculum Part 1, and Fifth Grade Language Arts Curriculum Part 2 , I discussed important grammar, reading … Continue reading

Gas Prices Affect Schools

Rising gas prices all over the country are causing quiet a stir. Newscasts, newspapers, and all other types of media are giving new reports of prices going up each day. Even truck drivers have gotten in on the protest of the rising cost. Almost everyone in America has been affected in some way. People everywhere in the United States are being forced to recalculate their budgets in order to allow for the extra cash being put into their vehicles. Education is no different. Schools too are seeing a negative impact of the high fuel prices. It is costing more to … Continue reading

Driver Leaves Students Unattended on Bus

Previously I commented that the past couple of months had held two major runway school bus stories. In the first story, it seems that a student was caught in wrong doing. However in this story the driver was obliviously out of line. This story took place in Cleveland. It seems that a bus was on its way to deliver about twenty-seven students to a charter school when the driver decided to stop and get fuel. While at the station, the driver proceeded to leave the children unattended and go into the restroom. While inside, for some unknown reason, the bus … Continue reading
