Am I Prepared for the Ritalin Debate?

Am I prepared to argue the Ritalin debate? A few weeks ago, my son’s teacher sat down with me and spoke to me about his focusing problem. I’m a fairly open-minded person and listened to what she had to say. Sure, my son struggles and gets frustrated easily with school work. But does that mean he requires Ritalin? I decided to give it a shot. We went to the doctor and even he was reluctant to prescribe anything as my son did well on his last report card. I explained then that even though he did just fine, it was … Continue reading

Hope with Ritalin

I was told early on that my son showed signs of ADD. Being one of those people who feel ADD is over diagnosed, I had a mental laundry list of all the other things that could be attributing to my son’s behavior. My son is a 5 year old high energy little boy. He is not what I consider to be hyperactive. Due to prenatal drug exposure and family medical history, there could be any number of neurological issues contributing to his behaviors. We have looked at Sensory Integration Dysfunction (DSI) because he appeared to be seeking sensory input by … Continue reading

Keep A Close Eye On Your Teen’s Medications

If your child has ADHD, then it is a very good idea to keep a close watch over the prescription medication that your child is taking. It is not unheard of for teenagers and young adults to sell some of their medicine to their peers, or to give a few of their pills to a friend. How well do you trust your child? Parents of children who have ADHD usually realize that there is the potential that certain types of medications can be addictive. Parents who are especially concerned that their child will become addicted to his or her medication … Continue reading

Are You a Reluctant Homeschooler?

I started out our homeschooling journey reluctantly. I had no intention to homeschool our children until I saw that public education was not going to work and that private school was not something I could afford. I had every intention to help my children as they needed. The bulk of the teaching however, would be in school, in a classroom with other kids and someone who was getting paid to do the job. After all, I had my own plans and interests and was quite talented at what I was doing. Still things kept happening that made me admit that … Continue reading

How Early Intervention Helped our Family

Soon after our first son was placed in our home, I noticed some strange behaviors. He would become easily frustrated with his toys screaming or throwing them when they didn’t work how he wanted them to. He was 16 months when I sought early intervention (EI) services for him. At that time, the special education teacher didn’t feel he needed regular visits but agreed to keep a file open on him should other behaviors arise. When he was three, his tantrums and sensory functions didn’t seem normal. He was entered into the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program for 3-5 … Continue reading

Please Pray For My Son

This might be an unusual blog, but it’s a desperate plea from a mom who doesn’t know what else to do. I need prayer for my son right now. Whatever you might be doing, I humbly ask you to pray. My son is 5 years old. He was adopted. He has anxiety issues, explosiveness, and impulse control issues. Last year we dealt with a cycling of out of control behaviors. We got him into see his pediatrician, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Childhood bipolar has thus far been ruled out. ADD has not. My son shows signs of fetal drug … Continue reading
