Grateful for Baby

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I decided to think about all the things that I am grateful for about my job as a Mother to my sweet little baby. Yesterday, one of my older children was sick. I had very little sleep, and had been up since about 2 am. Needless to say, I was pretty grouchy when the sun started to rise and I had to continue on with my daily duties as a Mom. But, then my baby woke up. I walked into his room, and he smiled at me (like he always does). I thought to myself, … Continue reading

Things You Just Get Over With Another Baby

I just added baby number 3 to my bunch. It’s been a whirlwind the past 3 1/2 months as we all get used to this new bundle, and as I, the mama, get used to having three kids!! It seems like so many people to raise. And, to some it is, but to other Moms, my little trio of children probably doesn’t seem like any trouble at all. I love this picture of my three little ones. It’s perfection in my mind. It’s real motherhood. It was 10 am and we were all still in PJs and baby brother was … Continue reading

First Things First

I feel like an old hat at this divorced woman/single mom thing, I’ve been doing it for long enough that my daughter is an adult now. Looking back there are so many things I wish I had done differently, not with my daughter, with the relationship with my ex husband. Most of us are single parents because it becomes our only option. Although many people choose to become parents without partners, for most of us the decision was thrust upon us. When you are in the middle of a divorce and your heart is breaking and you have no idea … Continue reading

The High Price of Being Thankful

Tis the season for homemade turkey. If you are a parent of elementary-aged kids, then “homemade” is code for “handmade,” which basically means that the exterior of your refrigerator is coated with dozens of construction paper birds. Mine is. With 10 days and counting until Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old has already come home from school with no less than 14 handcrafted turkeys. Kind of makes me wonder how much time is allotted for arts and crafts versus reading, writing and arithmetic. Regardless, I’m happy to display my child’s feathery masterpieces. In fact, I am particularly fond of the handprint bird she … Continue reading

Big Sister, Little Sister

We got to spend the weekend with Hailey’s sister Ivy. I’m always happy when the girls have a chance to spend time together. When Ivy was born her mother promised Hailey they would always have a relationship. I reminded Hailey that due to the fifteen year age difference she was going to have to work hard to have a relationship with her sister. Some people think it’s strange that my ex husbands child with another woman spends the weekend at my home. I want the girls to think this is normal. Ivy is Hailey’s only sibling and I do everything … Continue reading

Benefits To Being A Single Parent

As a parent, every day I’m amazed to see the young woman my daughter is turning into. I think that is true for all parents, we look at our children and there is so much joy that we get to be a part of something so wonderful. As a single parent there is a little sadness mixed with that joy, sadness that our kids don’t get to grow up in an intact family, that Daddy doesn’t help tuck them in every night. But always there is joy and pride in watching them grow and seeing the men and women they … Continue reading

Being a Single Mom without Child Support

I know that being a single parent is hard for both moms and dads who go at it alone. Add to that the lack of child support and it seems to be a losing battle. I am sure there are single parents out there who are very successful and are able to care for their children without financial concern. I wish I were one of them. I chose not to pursue child support because I knew that with child support would be visitation. I didn’t want the father of my child to have visitation. I made the financial sacrifice in … Continue reading

15 Things My Husband Makes Me Grateful For

Happy Thanksgiving! Because today is my favorite day of the year (yep, I do believe I look forward to Thanksgiving even more than my own birthday) I want to take some time to list all I have to be grateful for. Well, I’ll list everything I have to be grateful for in my gratitude journal. Like I did over in Pets, I’ll keep this list category specific. Which means I’ll list all the things I’m grateful for pertaining to Wayne and our marriage. I’m grateful… 1. That we’re together today. 2. That we’ve got to spend the whole week together … Continue reading

15 Things My Pets Make Me Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving! This is my favorite day of the year. As I explained in I Am So Thankful for All of the Animal Lovers Out There, I was given a precious gift back in 1999: Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy. It was that book that introduced me to the power of gratitude and to keeping track of it in a gratitude journal, which was an act that revolutionized my life. I don’t always write in my gratitude journal every day, it’s more like a weekly journal, but today is the one day of the … Continue reading
