Score One for the Mama Bear

When was the last time you unleashed your inner Mama Bear? Unless you are Caroline Ingalls, there’s a good chance you’ve let her roar on more than one occasion. Typically, moms turn from wise owls to angry bears when they feel their children are in danger and need protection. Apparently, that’s what compelled Florida mom Felecia Phillips to go ballistic on a kid accused of bullying her son Terec Smith. According to reports, when Terec told his mom he was being harassed by another kid, she escorted him to the school bus stop to confront the alleged bully. When she … Continue reading

Mama Bear vs. Wise Owl

My 7-year-old is fond of telling strangers that her mom is “90 percent wise owl and 10 percent angry mama bear.” She got the line from a TV commercial. I think it’s from those Charmin ads, which feature the family of animated bears discussing the merits of proper rump wiping skills, and how it’s never a good idea to walk around with toilet paper remnants sticking to your backside. Hey, even bears have to preserve their dignity. In any event, back to the mama bear versus wise owl line. When my daughter says it, I take it as a compliment, … Continue reading

I am a Mother

While I love being a mother there are days when I forget that there was more to my life before this. I’ve come to identify with the title so much that I honestly can’t remember what life was like before I had Logan. I must have had so much more time on my hands! I remembered feeling like my life was so busy, then I had a baby and I found that I didn’t even know the meaning of the word! My life quickly became filled with diapers and feeding and rocking. My entire world revolved around this little baby. … Continue reading

Book Review: Nikolai, the Only Bear

Nikolai, the Only Bear is a story about a bear who lives in an orphanage (in Russia. Nikolai is the only bear in the orphanage. He is three years old. He tries to play with the other children, but they are afraid of him. His caregivers are constantly telling him to say hello, say thank you, play nice, sing the same lyrics as everyone else at music class. The problem is, Nikolai does say all those things, but the caregivers and the other children don’t speak bear. The softly colored illustrations show the orphans playing and being cared for in … Continue reading

Forever a Mother

The word “mother” encompasses many avenues. A single mother’s role is two-fold. We are the parents, the mother, the father, the doctor, the healer of “boo-boos”, the advisor, the disciplinarian, the playmate, the teacher, the breadwinner, the entertainment committee, the bodyguard, the arms that hold them tight when they are scared, sad, or lonely and so much more. A mother is the one that sits by their bed when they are sick, the one that lets them crawl in next to them in the middle of the night we they have had a bad dream. A mother is the one … Continue reading

The Stigma of Being a Mental Health Patient

As if it isn’t bad enough to be besieged by depression, bipolar disorder or any number of conditions that may land you in a medical facility for a period of time, there is the added stigma you as a patient may receive from family members, neighbors, acquaintances, even your work colleagues. While the majority of hospital beds are occupied by people suffering from mental and emotional complaints, the topic is still generally not talked about and many people are reluctant to admit to suffering from a mental disorder of some description. However, when the relevant condition deteriorates such that the … Continue reading

Courtney and Crew Present: Mother’s Day Merriment

Most Mother’s Days are fairly uneventful. Maybe Wayne (known as Papa to Murphy, Tabby, and Mr. Meow) will make breakfast in bed for me. Usually he tries to get cards that they can all write a nice sentiment in. (With his help of course.) Once in a while he gets flowers. Any and all of the above then become sources of merriment for the crew. Hopefully the flowers are roses, which are the cats’ favorite. Cards left unattended on countertops become prime shredding targets. (As do the envelopes which hopefully aren’t immediately discarded in the trash.) And breakfast? Begging time! … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: C-Sections and Bonding After Birth

Question: Do mothers who have c-sections not bond as well with their babies? This is not a question someone e-mailed me, but rather something that was being discussed in the forums. It’s a very sensitive issue and frankly, I think there has been made much ado about nothing. Bonding is NOT a one time event. It is not this little narrow window of opportunity that once is lost, is gone forever. It is a process and to be honest, I think a lot of people don’t understand what exactly is meant by bonding when they talk about it. What is … Continue reading

Celebs’ New Gigs—-Anne’s an Ambassador and Suri’s a Polar Bear?

Frankly, I am surprised that it took so long for a cosmetics company to hire Anne Hathaway. Even before she made a name for herself in “The Devil Wears Prada” I always thought she had one of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood. Her skin is flawless (at least it appears to be in the shots I’ve seen) and her smile is infectious. She just has a fresh look about her. Now it appears execs at Lancome are giving the actress the recognition she deserves. Following in the footsteps of the company’s past famous faces, Kate Winslet and Clive Owen, … Continue reading
