Activities That Teach #10 COOKIE PAINT!

Here's a fun, yummy summer activity to do with your child.

Prerequisite Skills:

• Grasps object in one hand.
• Uses thumb in opposition with two fingers.
• Moves wrist in side to side motion.
• Moves hand and forearm to a target.
• Moves wrist in up and down motion.

Materials Needed:

1. Sturdy cookies. (Use your own recipe, and get creative. Sugar cookies, gingerbread, or chocolate chip cookies without the chips work well, if they are thick and larger than usual. Get creative. You can use cookie cutters to vary the shapes of the cookies, or make GIANT cookies to paint on. If you don't want to cook, use graham cracker squares or another firm packaged cookie.)

2. Small paint brushes. (Make sure they are absolutely free from paint residue, or buy some new ones at a craft store.)

3. Cookie paint. Slightly water down your favorite icing, or use the following recipe:

   1 egg yolk;

   1 tsp. water;

   1 to 2 tsp. powdered sugar;

   food coloring

   Mix the egg yolk, water, and sugar. Divide into 2 or 3 dishes. Mix in coloring. Paint onto cookies.

Methods:

1. Place baked cookies on waxed paper.

2. Put a brush in each dish of icing paint.

3. Guide your child in painting dots, stripes, and other designs.

4. Add m&ms, chocolate chips, raisins, or sprinkles for added effects.

Skills:

• Makes whole arm strokes with paint brush.

• Use wrist in scrubbing action.

• Paints using dots, lines, or circular strokes.

• Learn about color, shapes, eyes, mouth, etc.
